Sufficiency is the limitation on excessive consumption of energy, materials, and land to live well within planetary boundaries. Unlike efficiency (more output per input) or renewables (cleaner energy), it demands absolute reductions while ensuring global basic needs.​

With six out of nine planetary boundaries being breeched and Germany not sufficiently complying with ecological limits, the SRU argues that sufficiency needs to be included in the ecological debate.
